How to Paint a Geometric Triangle Wall

How to paint a geometric triangle wall

It all started with an infomercial.

For this.

Fluidity

BUT WAIT!  THERE’S MORE!

I’ll let you in on a little secret.  I used to be addicted to infomercials.  Bad.  I may or may not have several useless items to make my life “simpler.”

One night I was up late feeding Evelyn.  And as the middle of the night would have it, I got sucked into the devil’s circle of infomercials.  Had my wallet been near me, I would have paid $414.44 on the spot.  I said to myself, “In the morning I shall.”

But then I woke up.  And I said, “I’m ridiculous.”  And I knew I could build a barre.  And the lovely Heidi found a great barre work out on Amazon, with great reviews.

Problem solved.

Not.

How could I possibly get in shape in such a wrecked room?

My goal was to get this room in shape (see what I did there?) before the workout video arrived.

This black-green was Karl’s doing if you remember.  And it was my task to undo it.

So. much. primer.

I wasn’t initially going to paint the ceiling.  Until I realized how yellowed time had made it.  It’s like time peed all over the ceiling.  So I fixed that while I was at it.

2 coats of primer and 2 coats of paint later, it was fun time.

I measured the wall to calculate a grid.  Us Utahns are good at the grid system!

Then, I used the grid to connect the intersections to create triangles.

Using a pencil and a level, I lightly drew the grid and triangles on the wall.  (I had to really darken the contrast in the picture for it to even show up.)

I taped, using FrogTape.  (This is unsponsored, just my honest preference!)

I used Sherwin-Williams sample sizes.  The colors left to right are:

Jersey Cream, Taupe Tone, Aquatint, Ardent Coral, Papaya, Gaity

After I had 2 coats of paint on those triangles, I untaped them, and taped the remainder.

And just like that, it was done!

It’s such a beautiful, bright, and happy place to be.  I’m definitely inspired to work out here!

This is Buster’s take on working out.

Evelyn loves to be in her swing in the exercise room.  She stares at the pattern on the wall, and the sound of the treadmill is soothing to her.  Happy baby=happy mama.

My old view while running was quite the drag.  The new view is one I could get used to.

More on the DIY barre soon.  I will save you, like I saved myself, from the inner ring of hell addiction to infomercials.

    • Kenz

It really is such a fun space. I’m such an environmental person, so it really energizes me to be in a fun and happy place.

  • Kristin

Wow, that room looks really great now! Hoping all the colors and cheerfulness transfer to longer & more often workout time for you :) I think I’m going to replicate this in a picture frame with some paint swatches I have!

    • Kenz

That’s a great idea Kristin! That would make some really fun art :)

    • Kenz

Thanks Katja! She is such a gem!

  • http://boxycolonial.com/ Gretchen@BoxyColonial

That is so fabulous! I would walk on my treadmill 12 hours a day if I had a room like that. Not really. Maybe half an hour and then I would just rest and stare at the triangles for awhile. But it would still be half an hour more than my average treadmill usage right now! I had something else to say….oh! I am inexplicably charmed by that picture of all the little rollers and colors lined up in a row like that :)

    • Kenz

All the rollers lined up were my favorite too! They were mysteriously charming. I never wanted to work out in the dungeon. But now it’s a paradise haha

  • Amber @ Wills Casa

I love this so much! The colors are absolutely perfect!! Maybe if I had a room like this I would work out too. I mean I’m already being ridiculously ambitious just thinking about it!!

    • Kenz

Whatever, you’re perfect. If I had your laundry room maybe I’d actually do laundry, haha. We should trade ;)

  • Julia @cuckoo4design

So love this! I pinned something similar a while ago and have been waiting for a time to use this somewhere in my home. It’s perfect!

    • Kenz

Thank you! I also saw a pin of a triangle wall. It had more colors though, and they used it in an office. But the image didn’t link to a tutorial, just a home tour, so it was tricky coming up with a way to do it. But I’m glad it turned out so well. It was one of those things that would either be a total hit or miss!

  • thediynurse

Wow it’s so freakin gorgeous! Doesn’t it just make you want to work out? I’d get on that treadmill for sure. THe colors go wonderfully together.

Also… I forgot who it was but I was listening to a comedian’s audiobook and they said that infomercials should be targeted to parents instead of old people because their colicy baby always had them up in the middle of the night. made me think of you!

    • Kenz

hahahaha It’s soooo true! I purposely leave my wallet in another room so I don’t half asleep buy something. I do this because I HAVE bought things in the middle of the night. And lemme tell you… the instahang never came in handy like I thought it would haha.
But thank you! I love this room bunches. I actually look forward to my time in there. It’s a nice break :)

  • Rebecca Crowder Cantwell

You are seriously a maniac!!! You look at a house and it turns to gold!! I just bought a mobile home. (My house payment is seriously $198 a month. .) But I need some Of that magic. I have some ideas maybe you and Evelyn could come l out and Give me some pointers… (ok you could bring aaron too)

    • Kenz

Congrats! I would love to come over and see the place! Let us know when we can :)

  • http://www.desertdomicile.com/ Caitlin @ Desert Domicile

Love the pattern and the colors you chose! So fun!

    • Kenz

Thank you! I was really afraid they would look terrible together, but I just went for it. I’m glad it came out looking fresh :)

  • Ashley

This is fantastic! If I had a space to workout like that, it’d probably happen more often. Shoot!

    • Kenz

I had the same train of though. I had a really hard time getting motivated to start working out again after Evelyn. I’m really glad now though. I’m having a good time with it!

  • sarah

    you look radiant!!

    • Kenz

Thank you so much! It’s the fresh glow of sweat on my face haha

This. Is. Amazing. You are my DIY idol. I paint a door. You paint TRIANGLES ON A WALL.

Pinning the ever-loving spit out of this one.

    • Kenz

      Thanks for the pin-love Kim!

  • Katie Moon Adams

I love this wall! It is so completely awesome and gorgeous!

  • Tandra@Little Houses Big Dogs

Goodness you are so brave! I am such a novice to color, and will just stand back in awe of that wall! It looks beautiful, maybe by reading your blog your eye for color will rub off on me;-)

    • Kenz

Oh I lovvvvve color. I think the thing I learned is that a little color goes a long way. So when I use bold colors, I like to keep everything else white or neutral.

  • anne @ wit wisdom and food

That looks amazing but I know my head would hurt from trying to figure out how to tape that off correctly! You are amazing with your walls!

    • Kenz

It actually wasn’t bad taping it! To be honest, stenciling is a lot more work and time consuming. I was pleasantly surprised.

  • Katie Moon Adams

I totally love your wall and have even used it as inspiration on my latest project! Check out my Geometric Monogram Letters! http://thecraftyblogstalker.com/geometric-monogram-letter/

    • Kenz

Thank you!! I love those letters! They look awesome!

You make this look and sound so easy! This is gorgeous. How did you figure out what pattern to make the colors in?

    • Kenz

Welllllll.. at first I was going to try and figure out a pattern, but that became too complicated. So I just used paint.net to make the grid you see above, and I just started filling them in, and made sure it looked balanced and that none of the same colors ended up touching. For the most part when I painted it on the wall I stuck to my “plan.” But I did make a couple changed on the way.
