Great Room Reveal: Open Concept Living/Dining Room & Kitchen

This post is brought to you by the blood, sweat, tears, and sanity of Aaron and Mekenzie Crowder.

We planned this renovation long before I was pregnant.  And we started demo before I was pregnant too.  And then I got pregnant, and going through a major renovation just about killed all three of us.  I laid most of the flooring by myself while 5 months pregnant.  We finished the week before Thanksgiving, with a little time to spare before the arrival of Evelyn Faye.

God bless all the pregnant women who go without a kitchen sink in the middle of summer.  I truly empathize.

I happily present to you, the reveal of our other baby, The Great Room.

Here’s the brief overview if you forgot where we started.

We absolutely love how the 3 rooms flow seamlessly together for one big cohesive feeling.  It’s my favorite place in the house to be.  In the next post I write, I’ll be publishing the cost breakdown, since I’ve received so many emails regarding how/where our money was spent.

Now can someone please point me in the direction of club membership for those who survive a kitchen renovation?

The spaces all look so great. It is lovely to have the more open concept. I think you’ll appreciate it even more when your little one starts moving around and you can keep an eye on her better. Such a well thought out reno. Well done!

    • Kenz

Thanks Anu! That was a major element when we were planning out the whole thing.

  • Cassie Bustamante

oh how i love it!!!! i adore all of your choices- especially the furniture! and the lighting! and and and all of it!

    • Kenz

haha Thanks Cassie! I definitely think we made the right choices in furniture.

  • Julia @cuckoo4design

Stunning and the key word is FLOW for sure! It’s such a gorgeous space!

    • Kenz

Thanks Julia! I love the flow of everything now. It’s a great place to relax in.

  • Stephanie, Sandpaper and Glue

I love the kitchen tile, and the awesome new couch, and all the colors. And especially the cute pups :)

    • Kenz

The cute pups are definitely the best part.

  • Cindy

Wow, what a remarkable transformation! Kudos for forging ahead while pregnant–wow!!

    • Kenz

Thanks Cindy! We knew that it would be hard to do while I was pregnant, but we knew it would be 10 times harder to do with a newborn. And we wanted to have it done and out of the way so we could spend all our time snuggling the little one. I think we’ve done an extra good job with the cuddles.

Such a pretty space! I love that it looks fancy yet comfortable!

    • Kenz

Thank you! We eat our fancy meals of Mexican take out in our fancy kitchen all the time.

  • http://boxycolonial.com/ Gretchen@BoxyColonial

oh, it’s so lovely and so functional! I want to come over and, like, alphabetize the food in your wall of cabinets or something. Just to have an excuse to hang out with it for a long time. And those chairs are amazing!

    • Kenz

Please come alphabetize my food. Your company would be a joy.

  • eranfaraway

You two have done such a beautiful job! I am so happy for you!

    • Kenz

Thanks Erin :) I’m just so happy to have a sink. I will never take it for granted again.

  • Katja @ Shift Ctrl ART

Holy smokes Kenz this is one rocking space. It wasn’t even bad before,
but talk about taking it to the next level. I just love everything you
did here down to the last nail. I am also detail oriented, so can I just
comment that I LOVE that wood capped trim on the new half wall behind
the stair case. Such a smart way to finish it off. I love the waterfall
edge on the bar table top. So fab. You are magazine ready girl. What
does Evelyn think? Is she equally impressed?

    • Kenz

Thanks Katja! Thanks for noticing the wood-capped half wall. We did that when we were finishing off the banister. Evelyn is the most impressed of all. I take it as a compliment. She has fancy taste.

  • thediynurse

It looks amazing! You’ve got to be exhausted! Love the bright white and storage

    • Kenz

Thank you! We were pretty tired when it was finished. We finished right before Thanksgiving, and we didn’t do anything for the whole month of December, which felt like a record for us!

  • Nicole Boenigk
    • Kenz

Thanks Nicole! We are so happy it’s done. It was tough!

  • Ashley

Wow. It’s SO, so gorgeous. You guys did great!!

    • Kenz

Thanks Ashley! We are enjoying it :) It’s so nice to have function restored.

  • http://www.bliss-athome.com/ Kristin Cadwallader

So great Kenz :) I love the cabinets. It must be so nice to have that space for your fam :) xo Kristin

    • Kenz

Thanks Kristin! It’s so nice to have cabinet space now! We really didn’t have that much before. We never had room for anything. Now we have empty cabinets. I would be worried if they were all filled now!

  • John @ Our Home from Scratch

Impressive space!! Amazing work. Can’t believe you did most or all of that while you were pregnant. Every inch of this space is awesome. Love the counters!

    • Kenz

Thank you! I feel like I gave birth to that kitchen haha! I was just as attached to that renovation as I was the pregnancy.

  • kelly @ view along the way

Whoa. It is EPIC. I can’t believe you did that all while pregnant! You make it look so easy! Also, I might come steal your living room chairs.

    • Kenz

Thanks Kelly! Evelyn got real used to hearing the sounds of power tools in the womb, because they don’t even phase her now. I was using the miter saw during her nap time the other day, and she slept through the whole thing. And those chairs definitely have a story. I don’t know if it’s internet-ready yet though. They are SO comfortable. Everyone who sits in them is so surprised by their comfort.

  • Amber @ Wills Casa

Absolutely incredible flow between the 3 spaces!! Such a great set up especially for a young family of 4…yes I’m counting the living/dining/kitchen as part of the family.

    • Kenz

I thought you were subtly hinting for us to give Evelyn a sibling. haha. I’m much more keen on the great room being her sibling for now.

  • http://newlywoodwards.com/ Kim@NewlyWoodwards

Wow. What an amazing transformation. I may just come and live with you. Having an open floor plan is something I really wish we have, especially with Henry. I’m totally digging every detail.

    • Kenz

Thanks! I am just so so happy to have a sink, and a table where we can eat. Too many days eating on the subfloor, haha. You can come live with us :) I’ve got a triangle room calling your name
